A CONVEYOR RUNS THROUGH IT - page 2
"Cummings, McGowan & West has been real good to work with. They've got good ideas. They solve problems. And they help us get exactly what we want and need"

FROM CONCEPT TO CONVEYOR

"I was trying to convey an idea about operating efficiencies to my brother, Jerry," says John Tarble, "and that's when the lightbulb clicked on."

John's idea was to use conveyors to carry most of the rock and to cut down on truck costs and haul road maintenance. And when John and Jerry spoke with CMW, they knew they were on to something big.

"CMW has been very helpful," says Jerry Tarble. "They really know how to make a quarry operation hum. With CMW's help, we were able to solve several money-draining problems that quickly added up to HUGE savings."
Marco® brand conveyors feed aggregate from the reclaim tunnel to the secondary and tertiary crushing plants. Consistent flow of materials produces a better quality of aggregate.

The plan CMW helped design achieved 3 critical issues:

1. SAVINGS - By using conveyors, Charleston Stone was able to reduce the use of trucks, lowering their wear and tear and improving their cost per mile. And since most conveyors have a virtually maintenance-free lifespan of 25 years or more while trucks need major overhauls after only 5 years, the long-term savings potential is multiplied.

2. AGGREGATE CONSISTENCY - The conveyors were able to maintain a consistent feed of limestone to the crushing plant, eliminating the feast or famine problems commonly found in truck-only quarry operations. With a more consistent feed, Charleston was able to produce "Superpave" quality aggregate.

3. ACCESS - Because there's a river that runs through Charleston's quarry, getting access to the limestone on the opposite bank proved difficult in the past. Trucks couldn't cross the water and they weren't permitted on the country roads that service that side of the river, so Charleston was forced to operate crushing plants on both sides.

Now, a conveyor runs over the river and provides access where none existed before. This has allowed Charleston to consolidate its crushing plants, saving time and money.
